What Is Per Sector and Per Coupon in Airline Pricing

Understanding Per Sector, Per Coupon, Per Pricing Unit, Per Combinable and Per Direction in Airline Fare Rules

In airline ticketing and fare rules, misunderstanding how a penalty is applied can lead to major pricing errors.
Terms like per sector, per coupon, per pricing unit, per combinable, per direction, and per ticket define the exact level where a change or refund fee is charged.

Knowing the difference is critical for GDS users, travel consultants, and airline pricing specialists.

What Does “Per Sector” Mean?

Per sector means the fee is charged for each flight segment.

Example:
CAI–DOH–DXB includes two sectors.
If the rule says USD 50 per sector, the total change fee will be USD 100.

This is one of the most common reasons agents undercalculate penalties.

What Does “Per Coupon” Mean?

Each flown segment generates one coupon on the e-ticket.
Per coupon means the fee applies to every coupon on the ticket.

Example:
CAI–DOH / DOH–DXB / DXB–DOH / DOH–CAI = 4 coupons.
If the rule says USD 100 per coupon, cancelling all flights results in USD 400.

What Is “Per Pricing Unit”?

A pricing unit is a complete fare construction (one-way, round-trip, circle trip, etc.).

If a round-trip CAI–DXB–CAI is priced as one unit and the rule says:

Change fee USD 150 per pricing unit

The total fee is USD 150 — not per sector.

However, if the ticket includes two separately priced fares, the fee applies to each unit individually.

What Does “Per Combinable” Mean?

When two or more fare components are combined on one ticket, per combinable applies to each fare component separately.

Example:

  • EgyptAir fare: Refund fee USD 200
  • Emirates fare: Refund fee USD 300

Total refund charge = USD 500.

What Does “Per Direction” Mean?

A direction usually refers to outbound and inbound travel.

If the rule states:

Change fee USD 100 per direction

  • Changing outbound only → USD 100
  • Changing outbound + inbound → USD 200

Even if each direction contains multiple sectors.

What Does “Per Ticket” Mean?

This is the broadest level.
The fee is charged once for the entire ticket, regardless of sectors or fare components.

Example:
A six-sector ticket with a rule stating:

Refund fee USD 250 per ticket

The total deduction remains USD 250.

Fare Rule Structure Overview

Ticket
→ Pricing Unit
→ Direction
→ Sector / Coupon

Understanding this hierarchy prevents calculation errors during reissues and refunds.

Why This Matters in Airline Pricing

Many penalty disputes happen because the level of application is misunderstood.
A “small” per-sector fee can multiply quickly across multiple coupons.

For travel agents and GDS professionals, accurate interpretation of fare rules ensures:

  • Correct quotations
  • Proper reissue calculations
  • Transparent refund processing
