A Complete Beginner’s Guide to Fare Pricing in Amadeus GDS
By now, you’ve learned how to search for flights, add passenger names, arrange ticketing, add contact information, and include a frequent flyer card. In this sixth lesson, we’ll tackle one of the most important skills in Amadeus: pricing a PNR. Pricing is where the system calculates the exact fare for the itinerary you’ve built โ and it’s the step that determines how much the passenger will pay. In this lesson, we’ll cover the four main pricing commands: FXX, FXP, FXR, and FXB โ with a full video demonstration at the end.
Why Is Pricing So Important?
A PNR without a stored fare is incomplete โ you cannot issue a ticket without pricing first. The pricing step validates that the itinerary matches the airline’s fare rules, calculates taxes and surcharges, and stores the result in the PNR so it can later be converted into an e-ticket. A wrong or missing price can lead to ticket rejections, ADM (Agency Debit Memo) penalties, or unhappy passengers at the airport.
Step 1: The FXX Command โ Informative Pricing
The FXX command is used for a quick, informative price check without storing the fare in the PNR. It’s ideal when you want to quote a price to a customer before confirming the booking:
- FXX โ Informative pricing for the whole PNR
- The result is not stored โ the PNR remains unchanged
- Useful for price quotes and comparisons
Step 2: The FXP Command โ Stored Pricing
The FXP command is the most commonly used pricing command. It prices the PNR and stores the fare so it becomes part of the reservation:
- FXP โ Prices and stores the fare in the PNR
- Can be refined with options like
FXP/R,U(reprice with penalties) orFXP/R,VC(validate and reprice) - Required before ticketing
Step 3: The FXR Command โ Reprice with Rules
The FXR command is used to reprice an already-priced PNR, for example after a change to the itinerary or when you want to apply the most up-to-date fare rules:
- FXR โ Reprices the PNR and checks penalties
- Commonly used after schedule changes or voluntary modifications
- Shows the new fare breakdown
Step 4: The FXB Command โ Best-Buy Pricing
The FXB command (Best-Buy) is used when a PNR has multiple itinerary options and you want Amadeus to pick and price the cheapest available one:
- FXB โ Selects and prices the best available fare
- Compares all options stored in the PNR
- Great for corporate or cost-conscious travelers
Common Mistakes Beginners Make
The most common errors when pricing a PNR include: using FXX when the intent is to actually book (FXX is informative only, nothing is stored), forgetting to save the PNR after FXP, pricing without checking the fare rules โ which can result in hidden penalties or ADMs, mistaking FXR for a reissue and using it for a new booking, and ignoring the different passenger types when pricing. Another frequent mistake is not verifying that the itinerary was correctly selected before using FXB โ if there are multiple options, FXB will pick the cheapest, which may not be what the customer wants.

Conclusion
Pricing a PNR in Amadeus is the bridge between building a reservation and issuing a ticket. Use FXX for quick quotes, FXP to store the fare, FXR to reprice after changes, and FXB to select the best available fare. Master these four commands and you’ll be able to price any itinerary with confidence. In the next lesson, we’ll move on to issuing the actual e-ticket and handling post-ticketing services.
